Introducing Jessica Tonga, our exceptional Team Leader - Sales Support from Sydney! Come along as we explore Jessica's incredible journey at Sektor, from her early days to her vital role in our team. Uncover the transformations she's witnessed and the passions that fuel her both in and out of the office.

 

Where did you work before Sektor, and what led you to the Sektor industry? 

Before Sektor, I immersed myself in retail and visual merchandising for five years, driven by a passion for creativity and customer engagement. Alongside pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Management at the University of Western Sydney, I stayed busy with makeup gigs, especially for bridal parties, and participated in various events and runways. After completing my degree in 2017, I explored different opportunities but found my perfect fit at Sektor. Connecting with Mel, Grant, Matt, and Mike during the interview process felt like a genuine conversation, and the company's culture opened my eyes to new possibilities. I'm grateful they chose me! 😊 

Did you have any specific role in mind when you joined Sektor, and how did your journey progress within the company? 

When I joined Sektor in 2017, I started in the sales support team as a junior, learning from the existing team. In 2020, an opportunity arose for a product manager role, and I took it on, handling brands like Apple, FEC, and Bosstab. I found this role fulfilling, leveraging my sales support knowledge, and implementing it into product management. In late 2021, Mel presented a training position, and I transitioned into the role of Sales Support Team Leader in 2022, where I could be more engaged with the team and utilise my communication skills.  

How has your experience been as a Team Leader, and what aspects do you enjoy the most?

Starting as a Team Leader in early 2022 has been a recent shift but I've thoroughly enjoyed the role. I appreciate being among the team, fostering continuous growth, and having the opportunity to do more. It aligns with my passion for training and interacting with people, complementing my background in product management and sales support. 

These experiences have shaped my journey at Sektor, and I'm excited about the continuous opportunities for growth and development within the company. 

Which team members or departments do you work with the most on a day-to-day basis?

Well, obviously, I spend a lot of time with the sales support team since that's my main focus. However, I've come to realise that collaboration across all departments is key to improvement. So, within my role, I interact with everyone. We've got such a diverse and motivated team here, and utilising everyone's knowledge and skills is crucial for Sektor's growth. It's really about recognising and utilising each team member's strengths, which is something Sektor does remarkably well. 🤝  

Can you walk us through a regular day or week at Sektor?

Besides the obligatory coffee and tea rituals ☕, my day typically involves working closely with Mel and the sales support team. No two days are the same, really. Sometimes, I'm away from my desk, learning new processes or sitting with team members, absorbing their insights and sharing ideas. Training the sales team on processes and procedures is a big part of my role, but I also like to stay hands-on with customer inquiries to keep a pulse on what's happening. Additionally, I collaborate with the wider team to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies for efficiency. We even introduced mindfulness and journal sessions last year, which have been great for mindset development and boosting confidence 💚

What do you find most rewarding about your job? 

The most rewarding aspect, for me, is the opportunity to make an impact every day. I thrive on problem-solving and development, so being able to help others within my role is incredibly fulfilling. Moreover, the sense of comradery and appreciation within the team is unmatched. We share laughs, express gratitude, and genuinely care for each other, creating a satisfying work environment.

Can you share any interesting upcoming projects at Sektor? 

I'm really excited about the implementation of a new system in 2024, which I believe will greatly benefit the sales support team. Additionally, I'm working on hopefully expanding our self-development initiatives, such as workshops and skill-sharing sessions. The goal is to involve every corner of our business and empower each team member with new skills and knowledge. 

Where do you envision Sektor in five years?

In five years, I see Sektor continuing to excel in what we do best: providing exceptional service and solutions to our customers. Whether it's expanding our current verticals or introducing new offerings, I believe our commitment to channel magic and customer satisfaction will drive our growth and success.

Do you have any funny work stories to share?

One memorable moment was during my first week when we had the Biggest Morning Tea charity event. I was a bit nervous, but the ice was broken when I saw Matt, one of our managers, dressed in a bra and a skirt for charity 👙. It was a funny and unexpected moment that sticks with me. It just goes to show the comradery and spirit we have here at Sektor. Who knows what antics we'll get up to for charity this year! Stay tuned.
